Icarus's Wings (aka Icarus' Wings) is the fourth episode of Season 2 of Between the Lions, and episode 34 in total.

SCENE 1 The episode starts with Walter and Clay exercising their wings. Busterfield tells the pigeons that he hasn't moved since 1892, and wanted to fly like them. So he sings a song called "Must I Just Be A Bust". After the song ends, Walter and Clay decide to go flying and they both leave the dome.

Meanwhile, Lionel and Leona are bird watching on the roof garden. They then see what they think is UFOs, but it is actually Walter and Clay who crash land in front of them. Leona wished she had wings. Cleo tells the cubs and pigeons that people had wished they had wings since the beginning of time, so she then reads "Icarus's Wings" by Bing Dingling.
Let's get ready for ing
The pigeons have an idea!

After Cleo finished reading, Leona was about to ask Walter and Clay what it's like to fly, when Theo comes in and tells his family that it's time for ing words. After the lions leave, Walter and Clay look at the illustations which shows them how to make wings, and decided to make Buster a pair of wings so he can fly like Icarus.

Buster's wings
I'm flying!
SCENE 2 Back in the dome, Walter and Clay have just finished making a pair of wings for Buster, and even gave him a hat with a propeller on top. The pigeons read the directions, and the steps were "1. Start flapping wings, 2. Start propller spinning and 3. Start flying". After following the directions, Buster starts flying and leaves the library. Clay and Walter tell him to come back, but he refuses and flies away.

That was a mistake
SCENE 3 Walter tells Clay that giving Buster wings must've been a mistake. Suddenly, they hear Leona telling Lionel that their mother is about to finish reading "Icarus's Wings", so Walter and Clay go back out to the roof garden to get their minds off of Buster.

A UFO!
SCENE 3

Cleo reads the rest of "Icarus's Wings". After she's finished reading, Theo comes back with a newspaper about a UFO that is spotted above the library. Theo said that the "UFO" had wings, a propeller on top, and was seen flying towards the sun. Walter and Clay notice that the "UFO" is actually Buster, so they go back to the dome.

SCENE 3

Buster continues flying until he notices that his wings are starting to sweat, when the wax is actually melting off his wings! The lions notice that the "UFO" is coming down, so they leave the roof garden to be the first ones to meet real aliens. After hitting the trees, Buster finally returns to where he originally was. Walter and Clay are happy to have him back.
Monkeys in black
SCENE 3

Back in the library, the Lion family found the wings from the "UFO" instead of an actual one. Just then, a pair of monkeys in suits and sunglasses arrive and make the lions forget about the "UFO". Theo then gives the monkeys the wings.
Forgetaboutit
Insert The monkey also makes Buster and the pigeons forget what had happened before, and Buster tells them to get off him as he doesn't want things with wings on him. After the pigeons leave, Buster ends the episode by saying he'd rather have his dignity.

Notes and Trivia[]

  • The monkeys in suits are an obvious parody of the Men in Black franchise.
  • Cleo will also reads Icarus's Wings in a Season 5 episode.
  • Tim Lagasse and Jim Napolitano are mentioned by name as the illustrators of Icarus's Wings.
  • Despite this episode being a Short "I" episode the "Must I just be a Bust?" song at the beginning is a Short "U" song as indicated by the pink U in some of the words of the song. This would later be featured in But, Mama, But... which is a short "U" episode.
  • This is the fourth time a Greek Myth was Read, the first is Little Big Mouse, the second is Pandora's Box and the third is Hug, Hug, Hug!.
  • This episode marks the first appearance of a Teatro Hugo & Ines Segment.
  • This episode was last broadcasted on PBS in August 2006.
  • Moral of Episode: Following Directions is VERY important! Or things could go wrong real fast if you don't.
